about

Arkiv - A Box of Delights - my official Archive Box. Fourteen Discs of Archived material - 28 pieces - Addendum A to the Edition.

At this point in my music, for the 113th album, unlucky for some, I decided to take time out and create a type of space I’ve never had before - an Archive space. Arkiv - my preference for the German form of the word and using a golden yellow Daisy Wheel cover to distinguish it from the normal DCM Blue. Initially it was for just the two discs that begin the present 14. Called Arkiv 1 & 2 it was to be the first of a series. As I started to sense an end to all this and with the British Library asking for an Edition I started to draw together a number of pieces from the Archive to complete ‘Summing For an End’ but there remained a rash of other material I wanted to include. Once again I turned to the Arkiv notion - and make Arkiv 1 and 2 a space for multiple Archiv discs beginning with those two and stacking up as I needed. In 2020 - 21 with the nation’s lockdowns, I spent a quiet age going through the my Archives and finding 12 more discs to stack in to a 14 disc Arkiv Box - A Box of Delights.

I will announce the start of each disc because I think in disc lengths - I was brought up that way but the contents I will number consistently 1 to the end. If you are a download baby you wont even notice.

A Box of Delights Discs 1 - 14

Arkiv discs 1 and 2.

Piece 1. Inadvertence - Rh Arkiv. First of two album length pieces that kind of went astray and since we're tying things up here, for the Edition, I thought we had better make a space for them, where or if they would properly fit in I don't know.

Piece 2. Falls around me - Rh Arkiv. A second album lenth track from the inadvertence project.

Arkiv Disc 3

Piece 3. Two nice percussion pieces 25th June 2017 - from a short set I gave. in an impromptu show I was asked to contribute to. Held on a pop up Stage as part of the lovely 2017 Arts Trail, put on by the Six Streets Group, in the Kedleston Road area of Derby. A really professional independent Arts Event of Artists, Open Gardens, Pop up Cafes and Music - very pleased to be a part of it - All in my neighbour's houses and gardens.

P4 Breakfast at Maria's - the Day after the party before - I take a solo - nice sound quality. I don't even know what year it was.

P5. Ah Tea because - that's what life - and certainly music is about. Silly little scrap - but it is who I am - in case anyone wondered. I wonder if anyone will ever read this ? I asked myself once - what if no one ever does reads any of this - what was it all for ? I thought hard and answered myself - 'To Complete My Expression.' This is by way of a self-portrait in Sound. As the huge lower case 'j' - a piece I made once for a gallery - as a self portrait.

P6. Uncut live tape - Drum sticks on a Park Bench. It is old because we hear my Mother in the first few seconds and she has been gone along time - so I will dedicate it to her memory. Some interesting Polyrhythms.

P7. Cello Tape - Rh Arkiv. Finger percussion of Cello strings - no idea when it was recorded but I would guess that is on David Dhonau's Cello 'Cleo.'

P8. Unknown Drum Session 1 - Rh Arkiv. An interesting 10 minute Drum study.

P9. Unknown Drum Session 2 - Rh Arkiv. A really successful 19 minute adventure for Drum - I really don't know why this didn't make it onto the Dm albums as an acknowledged work - I'll acknowledge it now but it is too late for the Rh Catalogue. It missed it's place. - but it has made it has bow made it into the British Library.

Arkiv disc 4

P10. Julian and Maria - Flute Garden. Julian and Maria have fun in the studio. Sometime drummer Maria Finch swaps her drum for wooden flute. There is a disc of us at a windy stone circle somewhere.- as I recall the wind blew us away !

P11. Tetlow and Broadhurst Organ and Drum piece [AA tape] From my collaboration with Jim Tetlow - 19 Albums as Tetlow and Broadhurst. We began at his studio at Elmsthorpe, Leicestershire - an early studio piece that got lost somehow.

P12. The Equal to Itself [experiment no. 1]. Dusty hours spent hovering in the studio. I would often experiment deep into a night. To see what Variation was possible This was the start of one such journey. Rather similar to my Auder experiments which were much broader in scope. These focused more narrowly on Rhythm. But didn't make it into the catalogue.

Arkiv Disc 5

P13. The Equal to itself experiment [no. 13] - Rh Arkiv. Track 13 for a thirteenth track. The experiment took its course and this is the conclusion - 12 steps from the original.

P14. Tetlow & Broadhurst - On a march Morning. A piece prepared at the same time as our Eighth album Concertat but never used. Rather misty - like that March Morning at Jim's Elmsthorpe studio. I often spent the weekend there - at his parents big old house - recording and walking in the country. Concertat - as Jim would say - was 'One of our more difficult albums -bless him.

Arkiv Disc 6

P15. Codotype for Cello - an alternative evolution to my album Codasolo. Also recoded at Cellist David Dhonau's studio - during one long weekend when we were working on material for one of the almost incalculable number of albums we have together as D'juil. our contemporary cello focused Duo - focused with many combinations of everything else. For our 25th album we were joined by Italian Concert flautist Sara Minelli - our Trio in Five Parts, live in a redundant Church alongside a second disc of Electronic pieces - the D'juil staple. Where we have been others fear to tread.

P16. Etuda W - Rh Arkiv - Part 1: the Drumming. The first part - the long part of one of our Dance sessions. Choreographer - Dancer- Artist Joanna Geldard and I are working together as Etuda to choreograph music of mine - to create a Dance work for us both. Not a great deal of Dance emerged but two Albums did. Percussion W and Intonation W - live percussion a and vocal montage respectively. W is the dance studio in wonderful former church in Derby in which we recorded with its wonderful natural acoustics. I played into this acoustic making my drum a naturally sustaining instrument.

Arkiv Disc 7

P17. Etuda W - Rh Arkiv - Part 2: with Violin. Part 2 of the Above.

P18 Voration 1 [D2] of [D] in the DCM Collaboration index - Revenge of the Umbrella People. I explain below.

“The Perpetual Motif’ - Voration 1 - A fifty minute trip for those of us who "feel Obliged to space" [Tangerine dream] I wish I'd come up with that one - 'A lonely orbit- very far away' [and that was mine]. We, German composer Johannas Schafer AKA Dr C, and I, 'the perpetual men’ - have similar backgrounds and just for fun we formed the 'Revenge of the Umbrella People' Index D in my collaboration index. Our one album project being - [D1] 'Live at Pineapple Peppermint - an outrageous place, I shall not go into detail. Suffice to say, a few years Later we came back together to record two further album length projects - Voration’s 1 and 2 - for a double album perhaps.- and now we are called The Perpetual motif. Unfortunately he became seriously ill and the project was left unpublished.

He fried himself as many people did, on drugs - what people unkindly call an Acid Casualty - but that’s the truth of it. He seldom goes out now and shuns communication. He is happy for the Voration pieces to see the light of Day as long as they cost Ezra Pounds [a free down load in our terms]. He doesn’t want wont a separate collaboration for us as The Perpetual Motive. Rather to just include them as Revenge of the Umbrella People. In another life he is a maths Doctorate so he is actually Dr J - not Dr C, his Pseudonym.

An afterthought perhaps - but it shines a light on a part of my life and his too. I like to think he is happy on one of those very Far off places we visited together in music - calculating in the light of a distant sun. ‘Peace be with’ a distant soul. He spent too long at the Pineapple Peppermint - where unicorns lick you to sleep and play a mean bass.

Arkiv Disc 9

P19. The perpetual Motif - Voration 2 - longer and even further out than Veration 1 [see above for back ground]. Would we ever make it home ?

Arkiv Disc 10

P20. Drum session at Maria's 14.01.07 - A session of improvisation recorded at Maria Finch's house 14th January 07 - whilst I was living with her. Showing every quality of invention - It was completely lost in the Archives - until it came to light in a thorough search Christmas 2020.

P21. University Drum Session - Rh Arkiv [B Edit]. - from a session at Derby University's Marketon Street studios 2008 - Edited for the Box it scrubbed up nicely.

Disc 11

Julian and Camilla - Close Now

A Private Album narrowly Circulated - between friends and others who got hold of it...Self and Camilla Darling - an affection not her name. One sunny afternoon we decided to make an album - because we were in love - John and Yoko would have been proud of us. Actually it's rather good and well worth saving here for the sake of completeness. New Arkiv Cover for here as the original was a bit perfunctory. We didn't bother with a picture of us because our friends knew who we were, so I won't here.

P22. [Side one] Close Now

P23 [Side two] Ohh Just so

P24. Breath First - Rh Arkiv. I have no idea what this is - rather like it though - very short but worth a saving here. There are hundreds of hours of stuff -in the Archive - sketches and dregs and the odd gem.

Arkiv Disc 12.

P25. Electra - Rh Arkiv A. - a 45 minute electronic, wall sized piece, in the mode of things like Popenstrung - I moved on so fast back then - it never found release. The A version [ to identify it] - just adds a finesse

Archiv Disc 13

P26 and 27 - Monochrome I and II.- a long dead album project brought back to life. I found it mouldering in a huge archive called Arkiv G - Most of the tapes on Sometime live came from this. it was marked 'Hitting Metal' it was though a great deal more than that. Really an album project left unfinished. It from my New Horizon Projects and would have fitted in there. It was called Monochrome - truly a lost album. I remembered doing it but things just got lost I've looked for it on occasion but if things are marked wrongly there gone. It started with Metal percussion and built up from there It needed some work to tidy up technical errors - and to bring it up to my standard for an album. I would describe it as classic electronics. One of the final pieces of the 'Family' is back in the fold.

Disc 14

P28 Basspoint - the Directors cut. A version of my album DCM 20 - Rh 76 - mouldering in the Archive The Directors cut I call it - it adds a different view of an important early work - just through it for good measure.
