[O1] A Winters Journey
[O1] A Winters Journey - A Poetic Cycle of the Seasons {Audio Book]. Let me tell you about a wonderful man, an extraordinary, gifted man, A great friend of 30 years, of almost weekly meetings, to talk about everything under the sun and that as well. Meetings at his place and mine, his libraries, his learning. A Cambridge man and a Cambridge girl, his Welsh wife, a slight woman - a softly spoken Academic couple. My dear wife when ever he referred to her. A life dedicated to learning and to teaching - to explaining complex meters and difficult poetic forms.
I met him at a poetry circle I was invited to join. Somehow I met Mr Neil Croll after or between my post school life of Punk and dandy - girls and party - and classical music studies. My early Days as an Artist - before my life in Music and here we are in the British library. That was the me that met Mr Neil Croll, who invited me to join a poetry Circle lead from her run down home by the amazing Plumed extravaganza Alexandra Lee Garret queen of her Cushion kingdoms. She and I were great friends - specially during my long fight with Cancer. Extraordinary people I was privileged to know. The third member of that group - that I became the fourth of was Reg Keeling a seemingly stiff 50 something. The academic -University lecturer of the group. Surprisingly we became firm friends - he relaxed into his natural self - a man of infinite jest - to borrow a phrase. We read together, listened to music together - we drove for miles ate and drank together. He even drove me to university that first day - because I didn’t trust my own father to do it with dignity. I said to him many times that he was the father that I wish I’d had. He died in 2022 at 97. I read at his cheep hasty funeral.
On some of many such afternoons we spent together I started to record him, reading one of this completed books, ‘A winters Journey’ - the title from the Schubert song cycle he loved so much.
Publication was his dearest wish - to be books on a shelf like his lifelong heroes. I came closest to giving him that with this Album I made of the book he intended in his soft honeyed voice. The work ends with an interview I arranged with him leading him to talk about his life and pleasure. Before he died I was able to tell him that his book - Album would go into the British Library as a collaboration of mine [as a producer and as a part of my DCM label]. Slightly ahead of myself at the last time we met I told him It was already in the Library, so he could die with that knowledge - that a part of him had made it. His son who lived with him for years has abandoned the house - it is boarded up with all his work in it waiting to be destroyed as waste. I must take steps to get it.
I must organise and edit my own before my end comes. Composer Martin Gaughan has set one work of mine as a Choral Symphony and another as a mini Chamber opera. I was able to tell Reg that before he died, it made him smile. Books on shelves are the best we can hope to be - to be read or to be there to be read should anyone care to. I shared with him my phrase about my work for the library. about the music - where I asked what was it all for if nobody ever reads it ? ‘To complete my Expression’ - I said and he understood.
Though it took a long time to actually record and Master it was published between the Konnyek Triptych and Wenninger Broadhurst 4 and 5.

My Friend - Professor David Manly - Artist and Professor of Art at Derby, read about the Audio book - through me - and developed a whole exhibition of pieces based on the poems. There was a glorious catalogue featuring his pictures with Rege’s poems alongside - so that in a manor of speaking he saw his work in print. Reg and I attended the opening as special guests - how extraordinary are the courses of events.
